A battle is brewing in Stamford over a proposed ordinance that would ban pet stores from selling dogs and cats.

Safari Stan's Pet Center in Stamford sells dogs. Workers say a new law that would make it illegal to sell dogs and cats in pet stores would devastate the business.

The author of the bill, city Rep. Steve Kolenberg, says the law is needed to protect animals.

A public meeting was held Tuesday evening to discuss the issue. Animal advocates squared off with workers from Safari Stan's, who say they abide by state laws and don't agree with puppy mills.

The legislation and rules committee voted to hold the bill and will bring it up again next month, pending a legal opinion.
