Petition calls for restoring ‘the historic Tappan Zee Bridge name’

Last week, a petition urging state lawmakers to change the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge name to the Tappan Zee Bridge took social media by storm.
The petition cites honoring indigenous heritage, respecting local identity and preserving culture as some of its reasons.
Residents in the Hudson Valley shared their opinions on Monday with News 12.
"It should be the Tappen Zee Bridge. It's always been that, since it’s been in existence it’s always been the Tappen Zee Bridge," said Donnie, a former Tarrytown resident.
"I prefer it to stay as the Mario Cuomo Bridge. I believe in progress," said Frank Boggio, a Yonkers resident.
The Tappen Zee Bridge opened in December 1955 connecting Westchester County to Rockland County. The bridge was in service for 61 years before being demolished due to aging infrastructure and outdated safety standards.
In 2018, the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge fully opened in its place.
The petition had more than 3,200 signatures as of Monday evening.
