A firefighter in Plainville died Sunday morning from injuries sustained while battling a house fire, Town Manager Michael Paulhus said.
The fire occurred on Maria Road around 6:30 a.m. Firefighters found heavy fire coming from the home.
Due to Plainville being a volunteer company and because they were shorthanded, firefighters from Bristol and Farmington were called to assist, according to Bristol Deputy Fire Chief Dave Simard. Most of the fire was put out by the time the other departments arrived.
During the incident, a firefighter was injured and taken to New Britain General Hospital, where he later died, according Paulhus. No one else was injured.
"It's tragic. You know this is a small, close-knit community. This is a volunteer fire company that is very close, and this is devastating for us and this community," said Paulhus.
A family was inside when the fire began and was able to get out safely. However, their home was destroyed by the fire and the Red Cross is assisting.
Connecticut State Police are investigating the firefighter's death and cause of the fire.
