Bridgeport police say they arrested a convicted felon for operating a drug factory and that they found three young children living in deplorable conditions in his house.

They say they made the discovery during a drug raid at a home on Jane Street on the city's East Side.

Investigators say that when they went into the apartment they found heroin, marijuana and cash - but they also found three young children living in squalor. Hernando Pusey, 27, was arrested and accused of running the drug factory.

According to police, materials were piled high to the ceiling and the apartment was infested with bed bugs.

Investigators say it was almost impossible to walk through the apartment, as the halls and doorways were blocked with bags of rotting garbage and other debris.

Police brought in officials from the Department of Children and Families to check on the children.

Investigators say Pusey had just been released from prison after serving time on a first-degree assault-with-a-firearm conviction. Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez says "he chose to go right back to a life of crime."

Pusey's bond was set at $100,000, and he's scheduled to go before a judge on Friday.
