A 3-year-old was fatally shot Saturday afternoon on Nelson Street in Hartford, police say.

The incident occurred near 182 Nelson St. Police say Rondell Jones was in a car with his mother and siblings at the time.

He later died at the hospital.

Police say a black Honda Accord stopped alongside their car, and the passenger shot into the Jones' vehicle.

The suspects sped off in the Honda, which was stolen and later found empty.

Police say the intended target was the man in the car with the little boy.

Police are also investigating the homicide of a 17-year-old that happened a few hours later on Magnolia Street.

It's unclear if both incidents are connected.
