An 8-year-old boy died Sunday evening in what police believe was an accidental shooting at a home in New Haven.

Police said officers were called to the residence and found the child lying on the kitchen floor with a gunshot wound.

The boy was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Family members were present in the house at the time of the shooting, according to police.

Detectives are investigating the sequence of events that led to the shooting, which appears to have been accidental, officials said.

“What is clear is that this was a tragic, preventable, and senseless death,” said New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call detectives at 203-946-6304.
