An 8-year-old boy died after being hit by a car in Morris County on Tuesday during rush hour. Police say he was riding his bike on Littleton Road near a busy intersection in Parsippany.

The crash happened in a residential neighborhood with plenty of families but its also just off of Highway 80 and 287.

Police responded around 5:30 p.m. and the driver is cooperating with police. Parsippany Mayor James Barberio also arrived to the scene on Tuesday night.

"My heart was broken at that moment when I got there knowing that it was a fatality of a child," he said.

Residents say drivers often ignore the speed limit on Littleton Road and it's no place for a child.

"Even the elderly that are around here, I see them waiting on the side for the right chance to cross this road," said resident Janet Mueller.

There are signs around telling drivers to watch for children, but Mayor Barberio said, "You can put all the signs you want up but enforcement is the only thing that really works."

He says in the wake of recent fatalities in Parsippany on state and county roads, he's calling on more action from NJDOT and ramping up law enforcement efforts to slow down traffic.

"We're going to have to figure out how, and we're going to do it, how to have enforcement there, have police officers at certain times be over there," says Barberio.

He plans on meeting with transportation officials in the coming days about what they can do to keep this from happening again.
