Darien detectives say they have been receiving complaints about dishonest chimney inspectors scamming homeowners.
Police say some chimney cleaning companies contact homeowners claiming their oil company told them their chimney needs cleaning. Once inspectors arrive at the house, detectives say they try to frighten residents into making costly and unnecessary repairs.
"Don't let them pressure you, and if you feel there's a problem, call your oil company," says Detective Mark Cappelli, of the Darien Police Department.
Homeowners are urged to be wary of contractors who aren't local. Police say the best option is to hire a state-certified chimney sweeper.
