Fairfield police are asking for the public's help to find the person they said carjacked an Amazon driver at gunpoint and stole his delivery van. It happened just days before Christmas during a delivery on Woodrow Avenue between Pease Avenue and Mill Hill Terrace in the Southport section of town.
“I was shocked,” said Lindsay Lasczak, who grew up in the neighborhood.
“Certainly, an alarming occurrence,” stated Bryan Sage, who also lives on Woodrow Avenue.
Just after 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, an Amazon driver got out of the van to drop off a package, which is when a masked man dressed in black jumped through an open passenger-side door, according to police. The driver tried to stop the theft, but the suspect pulled a gun and threatened him before driving off, police said.
One woman who lives in the neighborhood but didn’t want to speak on camera told News 12 the driver ran to her door for help and was clearly distraught. She said he asked her to call 911, which she did, since his phone was in the stolen van.
Police responded and said the van had a tracking device on it so they were able to quickly locate the van. It was found about half a mile away, abandoned at the intersection of Gray Rock Road and Daves Lane. The driver’s stuff was still in it but several packages were gone, according to police.
“An armed robbery of that magnitude goes beyond anything I've heard happening in this neighborhood,” said Sage, who’s lived there with his family for about nine years.
“This street is filled with children and families,” Lasczak added. “It's just really scary how the world is coming to this, you know? We can't even have our Christmas presents or Hannukah presents delivered to our house without some kind of crime happening.”
The area is right by I-95, making it easy for a quick getaway. Other areas of Fairfield near interstate entrances have also been the site of recent crimes. Neighbors said there have been car break-ins occasionally, but this was a different level.
“I really hope the best for the driver,” Lasczak said.
Police are investigating and working to track down the suspect. Residents and businesses are asked to review their surveillance systems and share any relevant footage with police by clicking here.
Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at 203-254-4840.
