A Derby man is accused of sneaking into his neighbor's home and attacking the neighbor with a hammer while his own home was on fire, officials say.

Firefighters received a call around 3 a.m. Friday that a garage was on fire on Roosevelt Drive.

Police say they learned that Andrew Fogarty snuck into his neighbor's home while en route to the fire. Upon their arrival, officers were informed that Fogarty allegedly hit one of his neighbor's with a hammer.

They say Fogarty was found wearing makeshift body armor that was made of metals plates that were duct-taped to his body. He was charged with assault, home invasion and disorderly conduct.

Police did not provide any details as to a motive.

Firefighters found heavy smoke upon arrival. Crews from Ansonia and Shelton assisted in knocking it down. The Red Cross was contacted because the home was deemed uninhabitable.
