Police in Stamford are investigating a kayaking accident that left one man dead.

Firefighters say they responded with seven companies Sunday to a report of two people in distress in the water.

When they got there, they found a woman struggling about 20 feet offshore, and pulled her to safety. Her husband, 22-year-old Arpi Oscar Castillo, was pronounced dead at Stamford Hospital.

Neither of them were wearing a life jacket.

Firefighters say the water was 41 degrees, with four-to-six foot seas.

Officials say with the weather getting warmer and social distancing still in place, they're expecting a busy boating season. They say if you want to stay safe, you need to take precautions when you're taking to the water.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary offers boating safety courses all year round.
