A janitor at a Norwalk elementary school is facing charges for allegedly making threats against school employees through text messages.

Luis Torres, 40, appeared before a judge Friday. He is charged with making violent threats and breach of peace for allegedly sending the text messages on Thursday. 

Norwalk Public Schools says the former longtime janitor was fired from Wolfpit Elementary School, and police say Torres was removed from the school Thursday morning after school officials said he smelled of marijuana and was acting erratically. 

Police say the school handled the situation correctly and that at no point were the students and staff in any real danger.

Torres is being held on $50,000 bond. 

The judge said if Torres makes the bond, he would have to stay 100 yards from the school, have no contact with students and staff members, and he would have to undergo a substance-abuse consultation.
