The NYPD says a 31-year-old officer was shot near White Plains Road Tuesday night.
Commissioner Dermot Shea says dozens of officers from the Gun Violence Suppression Division were driving on Lafayette Avenue near White Plains Road at around 10:30 p.m. when they encountered Ajani J. Jones, 24, and initiated a stop.
Jones then took off running. That’s when police say one officer shot one round, and Jones shot four rounds.
Police say during that exchange of gunfire, the officer was struck one time in the lower back, below his bulletproof vest.
News 12 is told that the suspect eventually laid on the ground and surrendered.
The suspect's firearm was recovered, according to Commissioner Shea. Police say Jones is in custody at this time. News 12 is told he has been arrested numerous times in New York City and New Jersey.
It’s unclear if the officers were investigating the suspect for another shooting.
Commissioner Shea says the 31-year-old is a six-and-a-half-year veteran with the NYPD.
Jones has been charged with attempted murder in the first degree of a police officer, assault in the first degree, felony assault for assaulting an officer, two charges of criminal possession of a weapon and loaded gun, and criminal possession of a stolen weapon.
He was not injured during the shootout.
News 12 is told that the officer is still in the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
