Bridgeport police are asking for the public's help as they investigate what they say is the largest mass shooting in the city's history.
Investigators say 13 people were sent to the hospital after shooters opened fire at a house party over the weekend. They say at least two people fired shots through hedges into the backyard of a home at 19 Plymouth St. around 1:30 a.m., and 100 people were at the party at the time.
Police say five of the 13 people who were shot remain in the hospital.
They say one woman was shot in the face and was critically injured. She was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and is now said to be doing well.
A man was also shot in the face. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Police say the other 11 people hurt all suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. Officials say the victims range in age from 18 to 24. Police Chief AJ Perez says due to the angle of the gunmen's perch, most of the victims were struck in the legs.
Investigators say while it's not clear what the motive was, they believe there was a reason the gunmen took aim from behind the bushes. They say a neighbor reported seeing two men in hooded sweatshirts.
According to police, organizers of the party were illegally charging admission and selling alcohol without the required permits. Chief Perez says he intends to assign a group of officers to seek out these illegal parties and shut them down.
News 12 is told that the DEA, the FBI and the Justice Department are going to be brought in to investigate the case, and Gov. Dannel Malloy has pledged whatever state resources Bridgeport police need.
Bridgeport police say they're also increasing patrols in the neighborhood around Plymouth Street.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Bridgeport Police Department.
