Bridgeport police say a heated argument over a parking space on Logan Street led to a brawl, gunfire and criminal charges.
Police say 37-year-old Keilina Batista swung a baseball bat at a group of people during a parking spot altercation around 9:30 p.m. Thursday.
Batista claims that a woman was trying to park in front of her house and moved trash cans she and her husband, Manuel Torres, use to mark their parking space.
She said she nicely asked the woman to park a few feet up instead.
That's when Batista says a man who was with the woman began threatening her, so she got a baseball bat from inside her house for self-protection.
The couple said a group of people then began attacking them and they feared for their life.
According to police, a man in the group reached for his gun and accidentally shot himself in the foot.
Batista is facing criminal charges though she says she was acting in self-defense. Police are still investigating the incident, and it's not clear if the man who shot himself will face charges.
Bridgeport Police Capt. Brian Fitzgerald says had Batista stayed inside her house and just called police, the situation could have been resolved without arrests.
There were no serious injuries in the incident.
