What was expected to be a brief planned power outage in Pelham Manor turned into a much larger problem Monday after repairs at the Four Corners intersection went awry.

Village officials had notified businesses that electricity would be shut off for about an hour while crews repaired storm damage and removed trees from power lines near the historic police booth at Four Corners.

“We’re committed to restoring this historic booth,” said Pelham Manor Mayor Jennifer Monachino Lapey.

Village Manager Lindsay Luft had anticipated only a short disruption.

“There will be a temporary outage while the crews make the necessary repairs and remove the trees from the power lines, but that should be brief,” Luft said.

Instead, while crews from East Coast Lines — a severe weather response contractor working for Con Edison — were performing the work in heavy rain, a guide wire spanning the intersection snapped, damaging additional utility poles and creating a far more significant outage.

The incident also caused traffic backups along Boston Post Road as crews responded to the unexpected damage.

News 12 has reached out to Con Edison and East Coast Lines for information on what caused the guide wire to fail and what repairs will be required.

Despite the outage, some local businesses found creative ways to continue serving customers.

“I think it had just gone out when I walked in,” said Suzanne Snyder of Pelham Village. “And they invited me and said if I didn’t mind, I could at least get my hair dyed, so I took them up on it.”

At Four Corners Pizza, owner Joe D. said business continued despite the lack of electricity.

“The stove is hot, and as you can see, that slice is pretty warm. Yeah, it’s hot,” he said.

Village officials say utility crews are expected to work through the night to restore power to affected businesses and residents.
