New Yorkers head to the polls Tuesday, June 23 for primary elections that could reshape congressional representation across the Bronx and Brooklyn.
In the Bronx's 15th Congressional District, former Assemblyman Michael Blake is challenging incumbent Rep. Ritchie Torres. Blake is campaigning on affordability and new leadership, while Torres is highlighting his record on lowering child poverty, protecting benefits and addressing the cost of living.
In the 13th District, organizer Darializa Avila Chevalier is taking on longtime Rep. Adriano Espaillat, with a platform focused on housing, immigration reform and community investment. Rep. Espaillat is prioritizing immigration, affordability and bringing jobs to the district.
Several other races are drawing attention, including Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso's bid to succeed retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez in the 7th District and Assemblymember Claire Valdez's campaign centered on affordable housing, health care and labor protections.
News 12's Heather Fordham spoke with Jeremy Gruber, the senior vice president of Open Primaries, about New York's closed-primary system, which prevents voters who are not registered with a major political party from participating in primary elections.
In the 10th District, Rep. Dan Goldman is seeking reelection, while challenger Brad Lander is pitching his experience and focus on affordability and immigration.
