I'm Mark Suah. Welcome back to Power and Politics. Greenwich First selectman, Fred Camillo joins us now to talk about a variety of things. Welcome. Good to be here. Mark. Yeah. So tell us, uh we had recently, uh had Jonathan Jacobson on actually earlier in our show, you recently put out a uh a statement about the state Rep Annabelle Figueroa. Tell us about that. Yeah, I like many people and I, I read what uh she had said, um, you know, you have to say something and no one likes to pile on and especially, uh you know, after the fact you want to be careful with that, but something has to be said. And, uh uh you know, I think the people spoke very loudly, uh that they don't like that kind of talk or that type of thinking. And uh hopefully, you know, these incidents become less, uh less and less in the future. But uh it's still a reason why, you know, many of us in, in various towns have put together task force just to, to, you know, get ratchet down the, the temperature and, and to promote civility and, uh, and to really you know, unfortunately you have to call out, uh, when you see bad behavior, you have to call it out. All right. So, switching gears now to a much lighter note, uh, tell us about your recent trip to Italy and why you were there? Wow. It's, uh, it was a week and, uh, probably a day one of the seven days we spent, you know, spent traveling with, uh, rail and car and, and, uh in the air. But we went to Calabria and the reason we went to Calabria is uh Greenwich has two sister towns in Italy, Maura de Santa and Rose. Rose is in Caza, which is like a county and Calabria is the region. So, uh growing up, I knew part of my family is from Rosa Kens. And so we went, it's a mountain town, beautiful views. Uh The town hall was built in 1200. You looked out and I told Mira Barbie area, I said, what a beautiful view you have here. But, you know, like a lot of poor towns, uh the people who are really ambitious left to come to America and the uh the ones that um stayed there, you know, had it really tough. And so what they're trying to do now, Mark is they're trying to, to really get people to come back more and more and they're even offering buildings there that are falling into disrepair uh to be fixed up and for, for Americans to own those buildings. Um, so we're giving them some ideas. I went with, uh, former state Senator Scott France and former tax collector in Greenwich. Todd Lado, who's running for the State House in the 151st district, uh, this year. And, uh, Todd's family also from there. Uh, I had a couple, couple of grandparents, uh, from that area in that town. So we're trying to give them some ideas to help them. But they, uh they've been here before uh be they became a sister city in 2013. And uh they're planning to come back again and they're really, really uh proud of their American connection. Uh They love Americans and if you have a connection to Rosa, they just, you know, roll out the red carpet for you. It's, it's a really, to me it was uh the trip of a lifetime. Now, you said, I guess recently in a radio interview that there are actually more descendants of Rose in Greenwich than there is in Rose. Is that right? There's less than 4500 people in this mountain town today. There's more people in Greenwich and Stanford from Rose than there are there. That's amazing. Wow. It is amazing. And a few days after I returned, a man named Inio DeVita who lives in Trumbull, former Greenwich resident, came to see me. He was the last of his family to come over from Rose at age 26. He's worked for the town of Greenwich um for 38 years, uh really smart man. Um He donated a big painting of rose. It's hangs in the first Selectman's office. Um very, very proud and they're very, very proud people and you know, they want you to come back over and over again. A lot of the descendants do go back and they just recently put together what's called an emigrant rose garden. And so they gave us a big tour of that and they're very, very proud and hopefully we'll uh we'll get back there soon. So what's going on in Greenwich this summer? Greenwich? You know, summers are no, no longer the off season. Uh There's so much going on, of course, we have our outdoor dining that we, we love. Um We're working on lots of projects um uh right in the middle of our downtown area sits the, have a mere building which for years has uh been host to the Board of Education and we're trying to get them relocated to reclaim what is probably the most valuable piece of property on the Avenue and open it back up through a public, private partnership to the people of Greenwich. Things are lining up just right. We just need to get uh one more vote on the uh on the Board of Education and we're, we're, we're right now. It's 44. So we're trying to get to 1/5 vote there, but it's a very popular idea. It's something that's been talked about for decades. In fact, uh, 20 years ago, a group was put together by B Crumb, uh, and others that, uh, uh had $30 million or $35 million pledged and the Board of Education wasn't moving. And so that fell by the wayside. So we're, we're getting close and so that would be a very, that'll be a game changer, uh, for an avenue that's getting nicer and nicer and involving in a, in a nice way also at the bottom of the avenue. Unfortunately, we lost our last uh movie theater and, uh, really, even before the pandemic people weren't going. So the building is coming down. It's the only privately owned train station in Connecticut. So the developer there and the owner, property owner is gonna redo the building is gonna be nice and modern. It's gonna have lots of glass, couple of restaurants, a little pocket park and they're gonna call it Greenwich Crossing. That's awesome. Yeah, lots going on. Now. You're a Greenwich native. You do so much for, uh, organizations in town. One of them being adopted dog and you brought your dog with you today, Reagan. We're go, we're gonna introduce, uh, our viewers to your sweet little dog Reagan. And what is her breed? Reagan is a part German shepherd and we think a collie, some type of collie. And I grew up with collies and German shepherds and this Reagan poor Reagan had a surgery two weeks ago, uh, here in Norwalk. So she's going to go and get her stitches out in a few minutes. So she wanted to come and meet you and be on, on TV. And the other dogs are home. But, uh, they're a little jealous, but Reagan is very, very, very sweet and she loves people. Oh, well, you can tell that she is just a sweet little dog. And you said you take her to work with you as well, right? They come to Greenwich Town Hall. Uh, they stay in the corner office there. They let me know when people have the nerve to walk by the office and when they enter the building, they let me know that people are in the building. So it's, it's, it works. State officials and community advocates gathered in West Haven to call for the return of the monthly child tax credit. Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro expanded the child tax credit in 2021 under the American rescue plan. She's now asking for the program to be expanded once again and for it to be made permanent. We should go big and that is what the monthly and the child expanded child tax credit does. It makes a positive impact on all of the issues and it does it all at once. Delao says her bill, the American Family Act will create the strongest version of the child tax credit to reflect inflation, establish a baby bonus and include more families. Well, the state is sending the city of Norwalk, some $300 million officials gathered at Marvin Elementary School to announce the state funding this week. The money will go towards a number of initiatives, transportation nonprofits, flood prevention and education. A lot of funding is actually coming towards education. So we're talking about funding millions of dollars more for funding inside the classroom, tens of millions of dollars for infrastructure, whether it's for air conditioning or whether it's for actual school construction. So that's really important in the city. The maritime Aquarium and Stepping Stones Museum for Children are a couple of the nonprofits receiving the state money tune in to the news Twelve's political team coverage live from the Democratic National Convention beginning Tuesday.
