Oct. 5 is World Teachers' Day, and President Joe Biden spoke today about how his administration will aim to keep teachers in the classroom.  

Biden on Wednesday called for better pay, working conditions, and recruitment for teachers.  

The White House says educators make around 33% less than other professions. In 2016, 340,000 fewer students enrolled in teacher prep programs compared to 2008, a 28% drop.  

Biden’s American Rescue Plan provided $122 billion to schools for kindergarten through 12th grade. The president is urging states to use this money to pay teachers more.  

The Biden administration says it plans to invest in high-quality teacher prep programs and that it is focused on recruiting more diverse teachers and keeping them in the profession for longer.
