The spending plan President Donald Trump introduced Tuesday afternoon includes steep cuts to student aid, Medicaid and food stamps while boosting military spending.

The White House says the president aims to rein in runaway spending.

Workers at the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County in Stamford are worried about the budget. They say it's harder and harder to keep the shelves stocked with groceries. Food bank directors say they worry things could get worse.

"They have to get food," says Kate Lombardo. "They have to feed their families, so what they'll do is turn towards a pantry."

The White House says places like the Food Bank shouldn't worry. They say tax cuts will mean more jobs and fewer people needing handouts.

But the budget would cut food stamp spending by about a third and would not help train unemployed people to qualify for new jobs, Lombardo says.

"You're making these cuts on people who are not prepared for these jobs," Lombardo says. "That means that they have less money to purchase food."

But Trump administration officials say the plan puts taxpayers first and will benefit the country.

"We looked at this budget through the eyes of the people who are actually paying the bills," says White House budget director Mick Mulvaney.

But despite the cost-cutting rhetoric, the budget also includes a drastic increase in military spending.
