What should be a bustling boardwalk to kick off the summer season may be noticeably quieter this Memorial Day weekend.

A forecast calling for rain and unseasonably cold temperatures is dampening spirits for Long Island small business owners who rely heavily on a strong start to the summer.

“Pretty tough for seasonal businesses like ourselves,” said Brian Braddish, owner of Riptides in Long Beach. “We get 16 weekends to make it, and this definitely doesn’t help kick the summer off.”

Owners of beachside restaurants say lost business over a holiday weekend can be difficult to recover.

“We’re hopeful that people will still come out,” said Margo Palazzo, owner of Barrier Beets, located along the boardwalk.

Despite the gloomy outlook, some business owners remain cautiously optimistic. Palazzo said she expects at least some foot traffic, pointing to the loyalty of local residents.

“Long Beach locals are tried and true to this beach,” she said. “I think the weather won’t really stop them, they’ll celebrate no matter what.”

Across Long Island, from the South Shore to the North Shore, businesses are preparing for the impact while trying to adapt.

At Del Vino Vineyards in Northport, owner Fred Giachetti said his team is taking extra steps to best serve guests, despite the rain.

“We put in a tent this afternoon to make sure we can accommodate the reservations that we have planned,” Giachetti said.

Still, business owners say community support is critical during unpredictable weather, especially at the start of the busy season.

Back in Long Beach, Braddish said he’s hoping for a turnaround as the summer continues.

“We’re looking forward to brighter days and everyone coming down to the Long Beach boardwalk,” he said.
