Rainy weekend streak to grow across tri-state

If you feel like there has been rain the last several weekends, you are not wrong – the last five weekends have seen raindrops fall across the tri-state area.

In New York City's Central Park, 10 of the last 11 weekends have featured some sort of rain. In parts of New Jersey, that streak has grown to 11 out of 12 weekends, thanks to the Mother's Day showers last Sunday.

This is not new territory for our area, however, as there were eight straight weekends with measurable rainfall at Central Park last fall. And the record for consecutive rainy weekends is 12, set back over a century ago in 1895.

On the heels of our midweek coastal storm, another coastal storm is expected to form this weekend. The good news is that the track is likely to be much farther south, so heavy rain and gusty winds will remain away from the tri-state. Showers are still on the table, especially Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning, with the highest chance from NYC points south and west.

If Central Park sees any rain this weekend, the streak will grow to six straight weekends with rain. This streak does not mean a weekend washout, but many plans have been affected by recent weekend showers, and possibly will be this weekend. Expect a sunnier finish to this weekend with summer-like weather returning next week.

How do you feel about the recent rainy stretch of weekends? Will we reach the record of 12 this summer? Check back for hyperlocal forecast updates right here with the News 12 Storm Watch Team.
