Parents and community leaders in Bridgeport gathered today to rally in support of a controversial amendment to the city's charter. People at Bridgeport City Hall lauded a ballot referendum that would strip them of the power to elect Board of Education members. Instead, they say the mayor should have that ability. Those in attendance, including Mayor Bill Finch, insisted that holding the mayor accountable would keep schools moving in the right direction. However, opponents say the initiative is anti-democratic.
