Phoenix Community Garden on Somers Street in Ocean Hill got some upgrades as part of a collaboration between NYC Parks and Project EverGreen.
Hannah Wargo, community engagement coordinator for NYC Parks, says the garden is a staple in the neighborhood.
“This is an area where there's a lot of food insecurity and there's a lack of green space. So while it's important that we're growing food and allowing people to come in and grow food, it's also really important for people to just sit in the grass," said Wargo.
The upgrades were based on community input. It included things like improving pathways to make it safer, enhancing planting beds, revitalizing overgrown parts of the garden, etc.
"This is an area that really displays how community gardens can also be a community hub. And they're not just spaces for growing, but they're spaces for events and gathering and sitting and reflecting," said Wargo.
NYC Parks says this is the 10th garden renovation with Project EverGreen.
