Always a busy time of year on the roads, the combination of a record number of travelers and the weather forecast are both impacting holiday travel in Connecticut on Tuesday.
AAA estimates that 109.5 million people will be traveling by car during the holiday season, which is the most ever.
New York City is also expected to be the seventh most popular domestic travel destination, meaning I-95 South should especially feel the impact.
"Just going in understanding that there's going to be people out on the roads, giving yourself plenty of time to get to where you need to go helps a lot," said Eva Zymaris, a spokesperson for the Connecticut Department of Transportation. "Just reminding yourself that you have a responsibility to drive safely, and that everyone shares that responsibility as well."
Traffic data provider INRIX says on Tuesday, the best time to hit the road is before 10 a.m., while the worst time to travel is between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
That should be especially true, with wet snow in the forecast for the late morning and early afternoon hours.
Zymaris says that at any time, but especially then, it is important for drivers to minimize distractions and lean on anyone else who might be in the car with them.
"They're the ones that can help you with the GPS, to turn on the radio, to change the station, to turn up the heat, turn it down, whatever it might be," she said. "Please give them your cellphone so they can help you with all that, so you can stay focused on what you should be doing, which is driving."
The DOT also says there will be an increase in state and local police patrols 24 hours a day during the holiday season, mainly to look out for impaired drivers.
