Several Connecticut-based relief organizations are helping Haitian hurricane victims.

Hurricane Matthew left more than 1.4 million people in desperate need of assistance, including food, shelter, clean water and medicine.

Stamford-based Americares says it has already shipped more than $2 million worth of supplies to Haiti. But they say the destruction there is so catastrophic that there's too much for one relief organization to do on its own.

That's why it has teamed up with local organizations Save the Children and Hope for Haiti to help people on the ground there. Americares' president and CEO says the company is using partnerships to get Haiti's health system back up and running to prevent a public health crisis.

Save the Children says its organization provides health services to people there -- not just treating immediate needs but also trying to prevent the spread of disease and a potential public health crisis.

Hope for Haiti says its focus the past two weeks was immediate relief, like first aid. Now it's in the rehabilitation phase trying to build temporary homes and schools. It says the third phase will be recovery, which will likely take years.
