Republican State Rep. Fred Camillo spoke out Sunday about a $1,000 fine levied against Democrat Jill Oberlander, his opponent in the race for Greenwich first selectman.

Officials say Oberlander, who is chair of the town's finance board, was one of several members of the panel who agreed to pay a fine for spending more than they were authorized on their 2017 campaigns.

Rep. Camillo says,"It was disappointing to me to see that my opponent's actions brought about an unprecedented fine by the state Elections Enforcement Commission, but even more important is her reaction to it, which was to deflect and blame somebody else."

He adds, "We're talking about running for the office of First Selectman of Greenwich. When the public trust has been violated, that's a very serious thing, and in our town, we're better than that."

Oberlander told News 12 Connecticut, "Last week I reached an agreement with the SEEC related to a technical violation of campaign finance rules arising from a failure to change my filing status.”

She says, “The SEEC acknowledged that I was misled by a colleague and that I had no intention to violate the requirements.  I take full responsibility.  I was shocked to learn that I was implicated by a colleague’s actions; I will be far more careful in the future. This is election season and it’s disappointing to see Greenwich elected officials use this to divert attention away from the important issues residents elected us to address."
