Community leaders in Westport joined Rep. Jim Himes (D-4th District) today for a public forum on curtailing gun violence.

At Holy Trinity Church in Westport, Himes said the debate on gun control should not have been triggered by Friday's shooting, but insists that harsher laws need to be in place. He discussed the types of guns that he believes should be illegal to carry, as well as who should be able to own them.

"Most of us agree that the 2nd Amendment means something, that individuals who are sane and trained and licensed and capable and non-felonious should have access to appropriate guns," said Himes.

News 12 Connecticut reached out to the National Rifle Association for comment, but it has yet to respond.
