Report: Minority kids, even in 'wealthy' towns, falling farther behind in CT
A newly released report shows minority kids are falling farther behind in Connecticut, with the report looking at the "wealthy" towns clustered in southwestern Connecticut.
According to the "Kids Count" report, even in wealthy towns like Weston and New Canaan, which have some of the best schools in the nation, African-American kids lagged far behind other groups in academic outcomes and health care.
The report found that African-American children in those schools are three times more likely to be suspended or expelled.
"Areas that are highly wealthy, where all the children are performing well, those who are not performing well are still disproportionately likely to be black and Hispanic," says Emmanuel Adero with CT association of human services.
One state lawmaker says moving minority kids to the suburbs is not the answer. He says Connecticut needs to be spending a lot more money on struggling inner cities such as Bridgeport, and that includes school funding.
Some suburban lawmakers disagree. They say they shouldn’t have to bail out the inner cities.
The topic has been a very controversial issue in this year's state budget, which gives more money to places like Bridgeport.
