A report says the death of a man in Stamford police custody has been ruled a suicide but could have been prevented.

The Office of Inspector General says 36-year-old Jamal Linton of Brooklyn was arrested on assault charges in January.

Hours later, he was found unresponsive in his cell. The report says Linton used his belt to hang himself from a phone box on the wall.

Investigators say the belt was missed and should have been confiscated. The report finds officers did not cause the death but could have prevented it with proper intake screening or better monitoring.

Stamford police accepted the findings, saying, "We recognize the seriousness of this incident and have taken all necessary steps to review our policies and strengthen our procedures."
