Some Bridgeport residents are asking the school district to reconsider its decision to change the name of Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day.

The city's Board of Education voted on Oct. 13 to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day. 

The Board of Education defended its decision at a meeting Monday night.

Board members say they don't want to misinform students about Columbus' expedition, adding that there was a whole group of people who lived in the Americas before the explorer arrived.

Some say the board came to its decision too quickly without input from the public. The name change mirrors a trend that has been happening across the country.

Several cities have decided to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day to recognize the people who lived in the Americas before Columbus. However, some residents say that fact does not necessarily merit a change of the holiday.
