Residents of Building 2 at Greene Homes Apartments say they feel like they are trapped on the upper floors due to an elevator outage.
Missy Miller, a resident, says she has to climb multiple flights of stairs to get to her apartment, despite suffering from chronic asthma.
Building officials say the only elevator has been out of service for a week.
The biggest burden falls on families like Betty Lesniak’s. She says her 5-year-old grandson has special needs and cannot leave the house without a wheelchair.
"I had to cancel two doctor's appointments at Yale," said Lesniak.
Lesniak says getting the elevator fixed is as urgent as a quality-of-life issue can get.
Jillian Baldwin, the head of the Housing Authority, empathizes with the residents and is actively working to expedite the repair of the elevator.
"And we're doing everything we can to make sure we redevelop this property and bring upgrades to it," said Baldwin.
