A group of families who were displaced by a fire in Bridgeport thanked community members Saturday who have helped replace beds and other furniture that were destroyed.
The families say they are still in need of additional help a week after a fire that began at Bros Custom Car Clinic at the intersection of Connecticut and Union Avenues spread to their building.
Police say they suspect arson was the cause.
Maria Nieves says she is grateful to people who purchased new beds and other items.
"It's a big help because we lost a lot of things and even though it's material, it hurts because you break your back to get your stuff and to lose it like that in one shot, it hurts a lot," she says.
"The fire was devastating, could have been deadly, and the assistance and comforting that we've tried to do through these difficult times is really about Bridgeport and Bridgeport coming together," says Mayor Joe Gamin.
