Residents of a Hunts Point community are upset after they say new parking meters suddenly arrived in the area on Thursday.

People who have lived in the area for decades say they suddenly had to pay to park in front of their apartment buildings. The meter costs a quarter for every 15 minutes and people say they can't afford the extra cash.

Councilman Ralph Salamanca said that he reached out to the Department of Transportation last month to stop the installation of the meters. He said officials claimed they would not put them in, but then the meters were installed anyway. 

Salamanca says he will work with residents until the meters are gone. He says he plans on meeting with Department of Transportation officials next week in hopes of getting the meters removed.
