A Ridgefield man has been hit with the second-longest sentence so far in connection to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Patrick McCaughey III, 25, was sentenced to over seven years in prison - about half of what the prosecution was seeking.
During the riot, McCaughey used a shield to pin down an officer while others around him ripped off his gas mask. Prosecutors obtained footage of McCaughey on the Capitol grounds for around an hour, where he apparently taunted police officers as well. Later on during the riot, prosecutors said he was sprayed with an irritant.
He was convicted on multiple charges last year.
McCaughey’s lawyer says his client has no previous criminal record, and that he has since learned from his mistakes - including apparent misunderstandings about the 2020 election.
