Seven months after deadly, historic floodwaters destroyed roads and bridges across Oxford, the town has reopened its final flood-damaged bridge.
The bridge is located near the corner of Park Road and the intersection of Route 67.
“This was done extremely quickly, very efficiently and relatively cost-effective," Oxford First Selectman George Temple says. "I’m really pleased to reunite the town.”
Prior to Tuesday, first responders were forced to use detours when responding to calls in the area.
“From that bridge, we would have to go farther towards Seymour and down 67 to get to those neighborhoods," Oxford EMS Chief Seth Poston says. "Which obviously on a geographical nature, makes it an increased response time to anything in that area beyond that bridge."
Reopening the bridge will allow first responders to get to emergencies quicker.
"Being able to get around town efficiently and fast," Oxford EMS Capt. Danielle Rossi says. "Is one of the most important things of our job."
Some town roads are still being repaired, town officials say.
First Selectman Temple says the bridge on Park Road was reconstructed to withstand a similar flash flood like the deadly one this past August.
