Schools are starting up soon, and the Salvation Army is making sure kids are ready to go back.
It held its last "Lunch and Book Giveaway" at Scalzi Park Thursday afternoon.
Children and their families were able to grab a free book and lunch.
Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons took part in the event by reading to a group of kids.
The event is designed to encourage children to read, get outside and put down the phones.
"We live in a distracted world. If we can get kids to sit down, read a book, and enjoy themselves, that's a win for us," Major Nyron Smith said.
The lunches were provided by Chartwells Food Services.
The giveaways were held every Thursday throughout July.
