A sand tiger shark was caught on video by a New Haven man at Silver Sands State Park in Milford Tuesday afternoon.
Animal expert Mark Fowler says there is no need to worry - for the most part, they are harmless. He says they're in Long Island Sound to feed and keep the fish population in check.
Fowler says Long Island Sound has one of the largest populations of sand tiger sharks in the world.
He says we need to celebrate these creatures and can't be afraid.
Fowler says sand tiger sharks are endangered except in Long Island Sound, and that there have been almost no recorded shark bites in the history of Long Island Sound.
Fowler says the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk continues to tag and do extensive research on sand tiger sharks in Long Island Sound.
