The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search Monday for 57-year-old Raymond Callan, whose empty sailboat was discovered Saturday afternoon.
Callen, from Fairfield, went to join his friends from the Fayerweather Yacht Club on Block Island Saturday, but never made it there. His boat was later found a few miles south of Charles Island near Milford.
Friends who saw him that morning say Callan was capable of handling his boat by himself and never had a problem before.
Coast Guard Capt. Daniel Ronan says the effort to find Callan was "immense," and the decision to call off the search was difficult.
