What began as an evening barbecue turned to chaos Sunday when a car drove into pedestrians and parked vehicles in Bridgeport.
It happened on Central Avenue near Ogden Street Extension around 7:50 p.m.
Police said six people, including four kids, were hurt. So was the driver, who was later arrested, police said.
Security camera footage obtained by News 12 shows a person with a grill between two parked vehicles, with children on the sidewalk and standing nearby. Then suddenly a car slams into a parked truck, drives onto the sidewalk, and hits another parked car.
“Units arrived on scene, and upon arrival, units observed a female operator that was breathing but unresponsive,” said Sgt. Darryl Wilson.
Police said the driver was taken to the hospital and treated for injuries that were not life threatening. The six pedestrians were also treated and released from the hospital, according to police.
“It was determined the operator was traveling north on Central Avenue, lost control of the vehicle,” Wilson explained. She ended up crossing into the southbound lane before the crash.
In the video, the initial impact pushed the parked truck back into kids who were standing behind it. Then the car appears to sideswipe people on the sidewalk. Police said it could’ve been far more serious.
“Thank God it didn't end in a fatality,” Wilson told News 12.
Police said Crystal DeJesus, 31, of Bridgeport, is charged with reckless driving, DUI, four counts of risk of injury to a child, seven counts of reckless endangerment, failure to drive in proper lane, driving without a license, driving without insurance, driving an unregistered motor vehicle, and falsifying vehicle registration. DeJesus was initially held on a $47,000 bond. She was arraigned in Bridgeport Superior Court Monday.
Court records show DeJesus is on probation following sentencing for third-degree assault.
