Murphy is in Qatar for the World Cup and posted on Twitter that the country's foreign minister was his "friend."
Qatar is a country known for its human rights abuses and anti-LQBTQ+ record.
One person on Twitter wrote, "First time I've disagreed with you. Qatar deserves to be shunned, nothing more."
Another said, "I am proud to have you as my Senator but you messed up on this one."
News 12 reached out to Murphy for comment but has not heard back.
