More than 70 sex offenders are illegally living in Bronx public housing with easy access to women and children, according to published reports.
New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) policy and federal law prohibits sex offenders from living in federally funded housing. Lawmakers and community groups are pushing to have the offenders evicted. The NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services keeps track of where offenders live then hands over addresses to the NYPD. The NYPD alerts NYCHA, which begins eviction proceedings.
Officials say they want to know how the offenders slipped past three agencies and they want to make sure it never happens again. NYCHA says it quickly moves to evict sex offenders.
