A mother accused of driving drunk with her children in the car two years ago in Stratford will not spend any time in prison.
Prosecutors alleged Marsha Pitera, of Shelton, was intoxicated at the time of the crash that killed her 9-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter. Pitera was only found guilty of risk of injury to a minor for not having the 6-year-old in a child safety seat.
The judge called the tragic crash an isolated incident brought on by bad judgment. While determining the sentence, the judge took into account the effect a prison sentence would have on Pitera's sole surviving daughter.
Pitera's attorney evaded more serious charges for the Shelton mom by convincing jurors blood alcohol tests were not handled properly.
