Shine a Light campaign brings awareness to antisemitism at Jersey City Hanukkah menorah lighting

The Shine a Light campaign brought awareness to antisemitism and brought its message to Jersey City for the lighting of the Hanukkah menorah.
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop was joined by Gov. Phil Murphy and members of the Jewish community on the fifth night of Hanukkah to light the menorah. This year, they honored the four people killed at a kosher grocery store in Jersey City two years ago.
Fulop described Hanukkah as light overcoming darkness.
"2020 was higher than 2018, higher than 2017, higher than 2016, and unfortunately given the number of antisemitic incidents this year we worry it's going to be another historically high year," says Scott Richman, the director of the Anti-Defamation League NY/NJ.
The ADL tells News 12 that in 2019, there were 2,000 incidents of antisemitism reported - the highest in the organization's history - and the number of antisemitic acts seen this summer is what sparked this campaign centered around the lighting of the menorah during Hanukkah.
