The state's free sales tax program began Sunday and it's designed to give shoppers a break at the register.

The current sales tax rate is at 6.35% and so for every $100 a customer spends, they will save a little over $6 under the initiative.

Savings apply to clothes and shoes, but items must be under $100 each.

Keran Jonas, of Stamford, was out shopping and had just learned about the program. She was asked by News 12 Reporter Jeff Derderian if the no sales tax event would mean she would buy a little more.

"Being that I just heard about it 30 seconds ago, I don't know, I don't see why not. It seems like a pretty good deal," Jonas said.

Other items are tax free too, like belts, baseball hats, and ties. The program will only last until next Saturday, Aug. 24, so plan your shopping accordingly.

There are certain items that do not qualify for the savings. For some examples, see News 12 Reporter Jeff Derderian's video above.
