Sikorsky Memorial Airport unveiled its new reconstructed runway Monday.
Officials say they started planning the project as early as the 90s. They say the airport is located in Stratford but owned by the city of Bridgeport, which is why they've had to work together to make new improvements.
"It was an issue that both the city of Bridgeport and town of Stratford would fight over," Stratford Mayor John Harkins says.
Officials say arguing about noise and flooding concerns went on for years inside and outside of courtrooms. They say the runway has now been repaved and a blast fence has been removed.
"There was a blast fence at the end of the runway, we had a couple tragic accidents where planes ran into the blast fence and people died," Harkins says.
The town of Stratford also had to realign its Main Street to put in necessary safety zones.
