Fairfield town officials said Friday that remediation is underway at a park where contaminants were found in the soil.

The contaminated soil is being dug up near the sidewalks at Gould Manor Park and the work should be completed by next week, according to officials. Testing of other sites in town will continue.

Town officials say several years ago, Julian Enterprises dumped contaminants at a Department of Public Works pile. Two town employees knew about it and First Selectman Mike Tetreau says they have since been fired.

Fill from that pile was used at parks and school fields, which sparked a firestorm after asbestos and lead were found.

State Representative Brenda Kupchick, who's running against Tetreau, told News 12 Friday that she believes the town has not come clean about the soil from the beginning.

Tetreau has repeatedly said that there is no need to panic.

The town says it is now reviewing state Department of Health standards for Fairfield that have also been shared with Fairfield Public Schools.
