Southport residents will meet with police and town leaders Thursday night to voice their concerns over an increase in car thefts and thefts from cars.

Fairfield police say there were four incidents in the Southport part of town just this week, and neighbors tell News 12 they are concerned.

Fairfield police say that these type of crimes have increased in the last year and a half across western Connecticut.

"What we're finding is, they don't see the lines on the map," says Lt. Robert Kalamaras. "They move from town to town, wherever they're close to, 95 or the Merritt Parkway."

Police say a few months ago in Fairfield, the suspects stole a car and then led them on a chase that ended in a crash. Earlier this week in Milford, the search for a suspect lasted seven hours.

Police say they're finding it's often the same suspects involved. They say the suspects are commonly juveniles who are coming from the Waterbury area.

According to police, they are crimes of opportunity.  Investigators say all of the cases involved cars left unlocked and keys in the vehicle.

Police urge residents to lock their cars at night, take the keys from the car, and make sure all valuables are removed from the vehicle.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Mill Hill School.
