Southwestern CT facing high risk for brush fires
Southwestern Connecticut is under a red flag warning Monday, meaning there's a high risk for brush fires in the area.
High temperatures, low humidity, and southwest winds are all the elements that are needed for a severe brush fire. Westport Assistant Fire Chief Larry Conklin says although coastal cities and towns have the advantage of being on or near the water, the ocean air will help keep southwestern Connecticut's risks down.
There are currently no burning bans in effect, but people still need to use common sense to prevent or lower the risks of a fire. Some tips are to dispose of cigarettes carefully, keep any firewood away from structures, clean up weeds and grass and be sure to pick up all trash and debris.
