The 65th Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army, known as the Borinqueneers, was honored at the state capitol on Thursday.
The unit was mostly comprised of Puerto Rican soldiers and served in World War I, World War II and the Korean War.
Last year, the state General Assembly passed the "Connecticut Hero Act," which paved the way for a special license plate that pays tribute to the Borinqueneers.
"Today, with the unveiling of this plate, we're not only recognizing their perseverance and their fight for our liberties and our protection. What we are recognizing is visual. That when we drive in our roads in Connecticut, we'll remember them and they'll be part of Connecticut's history," said state Rep. Juan Candelaria (D-New Haven).
Plate fees range from $60 to $156, with a portion of the proceeds directly supporting the Hispanic-American Veterans of Connecticut.
